Happy 9th Birthday Sean!!

Sean turned 9 today!!

My feet - A saga

With all the promises I made about not neglecting the blog...i feel like such a hypocrite but you know what! This time around i do have avery legit case....and it doesnt have anything to do with being busy at work and having to take care of a thousand things at the same time. well, in part it does but it also involves having a fractured foot!

What? you ask...yes I have a fractured foot, and it has been going on for a while now...in fact even before Aji left for Manila. The night before he was busy packing his bags and I decided to do something useful and productive, what better chore to conquer than the dreaded pile of Laundry. I was coming down the stairs with the laundry basket and ina flash lost a footing on one of the stairs. There I was just limping until I sat myself with excruciating pain on my left foot. I knew that I had bent it while slipping. I held the pain and tears inside so as to not alarm Aji but I knew this was going to be a pain in the 'rear' for atleast a few days. I iced it that night and convinced Aji that it was just a sprain and All is well. He took a taxi to the airport and I kept Rhea at home that day since there was no way I could drive. The weekend went by and there was a big bruise on the foot, so i called my general practitioner to get it checked out since the swelling and pain was still there. She took one look and said that chances of it being a fracture is rare and it looks like a capillary had broken and resulted in a clot and that was the bruise. She advised that in case the swelling remains, to go in for an X-ray. 2 weeks passed and with the swelling still intact, I went in for the X-ray. The report came back and the Dr.'s office called to say that per the X-ray it looks like i have sustained a hair line fracture which is already healing. So wearling a supportive shoes for the next 4-6 weeks was the way to go. What confused me was that there was no mention of a follow up visit or anything even afer i asked. That was the moment I should have decided to go to a specialist. MISTAKE #1 - I decided to give it the 4-5 weeks per the dr. since I trusted her blindly. God knows why. fat forward to April and Aji kept insisting that I go in for a second opinion. After much prodding frfom him I wasnt sure who the right Dr. was - An ortho or a Podiatrist. Based on my limited research I decided that a Podiatrist being a specialist of the foot and ankle was the perfct choice for my ailment - Right? WRONG - that was MISTAKE #2.

So i went to the Podiatrist and he took some additional X-rays and came with a grave expression and told me that I was at a cross roads with? this injury. This was not a hairline fracture as previously stated by my beloved GP. it was a compound fracture and not a measly one at that. Its the dreaded JONES fracture which is commonly sustained by athletes. Its the fracture of the 5th meta tarsel and a very slow healer since it is at an area of low blood supply. LOVELY. In addition, hear this - this can recur and recovery may not be complete. One of teh options is surgery in which a metal plate is placed with 2 screws to hold tha bone in place to help completely heal. He gave me a fracture boot to wear, ave me a prescription for crutches and even suggested one of thise motorised vehicles that people with foot problems use. Oh the Horror!!! In the midst of all this, Aji was getting ready for another trip to Manila any day. I'm sure my shock and disbelief was clearly plastered on my face (esp. since he said that he could do a google on Jones fracture and it would say the same things he mentioned)and the nurse put me at a little ease by saying that I should consider surgery as a last resort and just check with the Dr. as to when I need to come back for a follow up. I came out of the office emotionally drained wondering how all of this will work out with Aji traveling and all of the kids activities and being in the middle of the busiest time at work. After a few deep breaths, i set out to the medical suply store to get the crutches and from there headed back home. In between had an tear filled phone call with Aji explaining everything.

Came back home, I put ina request to work from home for the next 2 weeks and then slowly started thinking about everything with a clear head. we decided to call Dr.Parimal - our family friend (Note to self - Do not wait till the last minute to do this) to get his take. He suggested that I go to the ortho, suggested a practice and also suggetsed that i call him back if i dont get an appt soon. I got an appt for Friday. Went in and this time hubster came with me and so did Sean ma bwoy! OOH what a difference, Dr. Kim was super nice and very patient. he did agree that it is a difficult one to heal and was perplexed why the GP didnt suggest a boot rightaway. he also gave me a band to wear on the foot and a special shoe to wear in case i have to drive short distances. He sounded more optimistic about a full recovery sans surgey. Well, we will have to wait and see. For now its 4 weeks of confinement in the boot and then assessment of progress. I really hope this works. he was also not very happy about our travel plans in Aug so now we're trying to figure out what we can do about that.

Rhea is 6!!

Our darling daughter turns 6 today! Hard to believe!!! Time has flown by so quickly and as she moves out of toddler hood, she is blossoming into a witty, smart, lively 6year old. She is such a joy to be around!! She has been counting down the days to today from last week.

She got a lot of calls today morning today to wish her Birthday - Daddy, Both Appachan and Ammachi's, Her perappa, ranimama and Sara, Kavya, Meghna and Bhavani Aunty.Daddy is traveling so we will have one more round of celebrations when he returns from his trip. We have tennis today evening but we will do take out from her favorite Vietnamese restaurant and then cut the cake I made.

She was so excited about her new clothes and her hello kitty coloring book today morning. I also got her a hello kitty balloon yesterday evening to kick off the celebrations.

Funny quotes (birthday related) from her -

On Saturday when I told her excitedly that we'll stop by the store to get her birthday gift (a bike with streamers et al). She said 'Mom, That's great but it wont be a surprise for me. I can go to my cousins house if you want when you go shopping for the bike!'

Today she came down the stairs and said - 'Am I really 6 today? I don't feel 6'. Then pausing for a few seconds she continued 'Well, I do feel 6, yesterday these pants were too long and now it just fits me. I'm taller today!!'.

Later on - 'Am I going to Ms.Jackson's class today or to Sean's school?'. She thought that turning 6 meant starting 1st grade at Sean's school right away :)

I thought of documenting tid bits from the activities/adventures and memories from the past year while I was MIA from the blogosphere before I completely lose track/erase the details from my memory. There's only so much I can hold in my biological memory card :(

So in the last 6 months we started two activities for Rhea - Dance (Ballet & Tap) and Tennis.

The dance class is every Wednesday and its for an hour. The first half is Tap followed by Ballet. Rhea absolutely loves it. I did feel a bit guilty waiting till she was 5 to start a full fledged activity for her. At the same time I was skeptical how it would all turn out. She was super excited about her class right from day 1. Here is a picture of her in her ballet ensemble at home. She has started wearing the little sweater since winter coz she feels cold in the studio.

The other activity we started for her is Tennis. She has been seeing Sean with his racquet on the court ever since she can remember. And it was my unfulfilled dream to play tennis growing up. So I was more excited than her I think when we signed her for it. It really helped that she started off with Coach Farshad, Sean's first coach at the academy. He is really good with little kids and she has a fun time every Saturday!

Good Morning Sunshine!

You know those days when you wake up and you really don't want to start the day? A fresh arrangement of flowers is just what I need on those days to add a pep in my step and a smile on my face and get going! A Starbucks coffee also does that, but we know that's not always feasible. I almost always have a fresh flower arrangement at home. Not only do they add color and warmth to a room, it's the perfect pick-me-up on those downer days.

So here's an arrangement from my home to yours and wishing that it puts a smile on your face and a spring to your step!

Enjoy!

Chat with Rhea..

This is the final video I recorded yesterday. This started off as a casual chat with Rhea. I thought that she might get distracted with the camera and not really talk a lot but she didn't seem fazed by it and carried on like it was a normal thing we do everyday :)

The part about the test, i wanted to do in a video because the other day I had a random conversation with her in the car that went like this:

Rhea: Momma, I love tests!!
Me: Really?
(Note to self - why was i not like this at her age - loving tests?)
Rhea: Aha
Me: What do you like about tests?
Rhea: Well, I like that I can get 100% and my Daddy and Mommy are so proud of me!!!
Me: Aww...we are really proud of you Rhea! Good Job!

When I did this video I was essentially trying to capture the same conversation but she said veered in a different direction :)

Bracing for Braces!

Today was D-day and Sean was so excited about getting braces. I didn't quite understand what the ecitement was about since it was going to make his life miserable. I guess its about having to experince what just a few of his friends have and I was pretty sure that he will jump fence 30 seconds into reality.. So I did a before and after video with him and here it is.. Before - here is what he had to share right before his appointment.

After - This is after we got home from the appointment

New member of the family.

Our family just grew :) and no, not in the old fashioned way...we have a new pet fish (this is number 5 by the way).

Sean has christened him 'Hunter Joseph'. You know we want to give him the respect he deserves and not just call him fishie or just the fish..

here he is. Can you spot him relaxing in his paradise?

A Frog or Prince Charming under a spell?

On one of my visits to Target last week, I found this in the dollar bins. I thought it would be a good addition to the deck with one of the potted plants for spring/summer. I put it by the kitchen sink for now.

I wonder when my someone will break my spell?

Later that night I decided to play a prank on the kids :) Here's what happened after dinner,

Me: Sean and Rhea, did you see Mr. Frog?'

Sean: Yeah Mom! Where did you buy it from?

Ignoring the part about buying it and tryin to keep a straight face

Me: This is not a frog..its a Prince under a spell. If you kiss the frog, it will turn into a Prince!!!

Hearing the Prince part, Rhea's ears perked up and I could sense that she was uncomfortable.

Rhea: But why Mom? Do you want a Prince in our house?

Me: I'm not so sure Rhea. If he becomes a Prince then we have to make sure he has everything he needs here, like his guards and his horses..

Now Rhea was really worried.

Rhea:Mom, I don't want a Prince in our house.

Me: Ok, then lets not kiss the frog. Don't worry about it.

I did't want her to be totally freaked out.

Sean: Rhea, Mom is just joking. It will not turn into a Prince. See I'll show you.

And Rhea shrieked like a catastophe was about to happen.

Rhea: Nooo Seannn don't kissss it.

Sean: Mom, give him to me, its not going to turn into a Prince.

Me: I'm warning you Sean, don't be so sure.

Sean takes it from my hand and gives it a kiss. Nothing happens.

Sean: See Rhea. Nothing happened!!! and he have a few more kisses to the frog.

I was still not ready for the fun to be over.

Me: Sean, don't be so sure. We don't know what that magic number is that will turn him into a Prince. It could be 2 or 3 or 10 kisses. We don't know. So be careful.

At that point he started to show a slight level of worry and decided to stop kissing.

And I heaved a sigh of relief that I could leave the mystery unsolved for some more time. But both of them have not brought it up in any conversations since then so maybe they just dont want to think about it.

Necklace day!

Rhea is so hilarious...she has something up her sleeves all the time and cracks us all up. Yesterday at dinner time she goes, 'Mom, today was necklace day!'. I'm trying to think if I missed some communication regarding this from her class. I did notice that she was wearing her 'titanic style' humongous pearl with the big heart rock necklace today. So I said, Hmm..really? And she goes 'Only I wore a necklace today!!' with a cheeky look and giggles away. Yeah, she totally just made that up!! Wonder what she has up her sleeve next :) here's a video that I took yesterday of her..I asked her to imitate my facial expressions and the resuts are so comically hysterical :) So enjoy!

A fun evening with my 4 year old..

Rhea and I were watching some TV together today. We were watching some ice skating. She seemed quite curious about it as we started watching.

Rhea: Mommy can you hold my hand s and teach me to do dat.
Me: You want to learn ice skating?
Rhea: Yeah
Me: sure, we can do that..
Then Sara Hughes came in and she started to do her routine. And out of nowhere as she was twirling,
Rhea: I just saw her underwear (giggle…giggle).
Me: Why are you happy about that?
Rhea: I think its funny (giggle…giggle)
When the commercial’s started…
Rhea: Mommy , daddy doesn’t have any money
Me: Why do you say that?
Rhea: Daddy said that he bought the XBOX and now there’s no money
Me: Trying to not laugh out loud…Don’t worry Rhea, I’ll give money to Daddy
Rhea: Looking at me suspiciously….how do you get money
Me: I’ll work extra hard and get money
Rhea: Her eyes light up and she says – SO you give money to daddy and you both then have money. Yes?
Me: Yes!!
Shw seemed relieved and got drawn into the skating again. And then the French skater wore a skimpy dress. She watched her for a few minutes, commented on her moves on ice and then dropped da bomb!
Rhea: I don’t like that outfit. I don’t know why she choose to wear that. Mommy do you like that?
Me: No
She seemed happy that we shared the same interest in fashion :)

Fall is here...

And not for a short visit...its here to stay...the leaves are changing color, the air is crisp, its getting dark sooner and the temps are dropping...its already in the 50's and 60's. I'm so not ready for this BWAHH!! Its going to take a few days to get used to this chill in the air. I also need to dig out all of the extra layers to shield from head to toe. This also means i have to triple my will power to wake up and jump out the bed when i hear the distant noise of my alarm at 4:50am. I want spring now..well, i guess that means winter should be here first. On second thoughts, I'm not reday for winter yet. On that note, I'll step off my soapbox and try to enjoy the fun things in fall.

Laidback Saturday

Today was one of those days when we didnt have too much going on. Gloria came in the morning and the house is now spic and span. Aji and the kids went for Sean's tennis class. I had a hair appt. I had got sandlewood incense for my hairdresser Maggie and she was thrilled when i gave it to her. She in turn gave me two of her hand made earrings. They are beautiful!!

I will probably get her to make a few more when I see something I like. I also got a free keratene treatment and free shampoo and conditioner. She really is a sweetheart. After my hair appt I met Aji and the kids at Pei Wei for dinner. Rhea was looking fwd to ice cream from Maggie Moos before dinner and even though it got a bit chilly when we were done with dinner we still went for desert.

Want to take a guess at the favor choice - you'll never get it...TWIZZLER. Rhea got marshmallows mixed in and Sean had Marshmallows and sprinkles...super sweet..

Cute and Comfy

My new shoes that is. Got them in the mail yesterday.

It was pouring rain the last 2 days and I was hoping we get a break so I can introduce my new finds to the world. And the skies cleared this morning and I'm wearing them today. Rhea will notice this first when i go to pick her, she has the eyes of an eagle when it comes to anything new I wear. I'm looking forward to her reaction.
